Job Description

Under the general direction and supervision of the Network Infrastructure Manager, the Senior Network Administrator has responsibility for the planning, design, support, installation and maintenance of the corporate network infrastructure and associated software. Works at a high technical level and maintains effective communication with management, user departments, and other support organizations. This position is responsible for the execution of all operational tasks required to implement a highly scalable and available multi -vendor network infrastructure. Documents all changes that take place on the data network infrastructure according to the established organizational procedures and standards of Yale New Haven Health System ITS.



  • 1. Responsible for on time delivery of advanced technology solutions while demonstrating a high degree financial awareness.
  • 2. Determine requirements, develop and recommend voice and data network hardware, software, & tools to satisfy the business objectives.
  • 3. Evaluate vendor proposals, conduct studies and traffic analyses, prepares forecasts of voice and data network traffic and capacity, and recommends modifications to the network configurations that reduce costs or improve service. Develop and presents designs, and implementation plans to management.
  • 4. Evaluate feasibility of new communications hardware, software and tools as they become available , recommend their implementation and develop an implementation schedule.
  • 5. Test, evaluate and install new hardware, software and tools as they relate to the corporate voice and data networks. Perform monthly performance, capacity and availability analysis of the corporate environment for all voice and data network components.
  • 6. Deliver complex network designs and solutions that are custom in nature, either by self or collaborating with other engineers.
  • 7. Mentor and assist junior engineers for this responsibility as well as provide leadership and guidance in the research and evaluation of communications technologies and products.
  • 8. Provide high level of technical skill to resolve complex voice and data network problems.
  • 9. Work collaboratively across technical, customer, and management constituents to ensure a quality and timely service delivery.
  • 10. Perform other job duties and responsibilities as assigned.



Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related discipline or technical training and /or related experience/equivalent in WAN/LAN/WLAN/Data Center/Firewall Technologies. A CNNP level certification is required.


At least seven (7) years of experience in a technical services function in a complex distributed enterprise network. Experience in a large complex data network environment is required. Ability to provide data network engineering expertise at an expert level required. Experience and knowledge in the following areas: networking architecture design, implementation and integration for LAN, WLAN, MAN, MPLS, Metro Ethernet, VPN, WAN and ISP network verticals. Voice/Video architecture, design, implementation and integration experience is a plus. Proven network experience designing, implementing & troubleshooting AWS/Azure cloud network infrastructure environments. Experience with orchestration & automation in the WAN and Data Center network areas a plus. Extensive experience in packet capture analysis. Complex routing and switching in multi-site networks.


Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) level certification required in any network specialty.


In depth knowledge of TCP/IP and LAN/WAN/WLAN protocols as well as a good understanding of voice and data network design, performance, and security concepts. Operational experience implementing enterprise networking equipment including routers, switches, firewalls and VoIP products. Strong interpersonal and communication skills required as well as the ability to resolve multiple complex tasks within a team setting as a leader and contributor. Extensive experience designing and implementing network topologies employing IP routing and switching in multi-site networks. Extensive knowledge of network technologies that encompass the wireless, internet/dmz/cloud edge, campus, data center & network backbone areas: IPSEC, Vrf, GRE, BGP, EIGRP, QoS, Multicast, VPC, VxLAN, Switch Stacking, VSS, Virtual-Chassis, Spanning-Tree and 802.11. Cisco ASA & Palo Alto firewall experience a plus. Experience designing and implementing a redundant, highly available, vendor-diverse data network infrastructure topology in a 24x7x365 environment. Understanding of Cisco Prime, Cacti, Solarwinds NPM, VMware vCenter, and Cisco Unified Computing Systems (UCS) a plus. Strong understanding of network architecture practices and experience within a corporate data center environment. Ability to work effectively under pressure and function in a fast paced collaborative team setting. Demonstrated capacity to acquire new skills efficiently and ability to blend technical expertise and business perspective. Able to make logical decisions regarding the best method to accomplish goals or solve a problem and is guided by precedent and general policy in making decisions. Able to coordinate and obtain cooperation of others and to handle controversial issues tactfully.


Work with hand tools requiring dexterity, skillful eye to hand coordination and repeated motion. Must have average to above average eyesight and be able to easily distinguish colors and shading. Must have average to above average hearing required to easily distinguish between various audible alerts emitted from devices. Frequent walking, standing and travel between all YN
