The Treasury Department, a department of the Yale New Haven Health System, is responsible for the prudent investment of the investable assets of the System as directed by the System’s Investment Committee of the Board of Trustees. As of October 2019, assets under management totaled in excess of $3.0 billion including ERISA and operating portfolios.

 

The Investment Strategist is a member of the team responsible for identifying, researching, evaluating, and selecting investment managers to manage portions of the System’s investment portfolios in conjunction with overall management of the System’s portfolios and contributing to the development and implementation of strategy for those portfolios. The Strategist will be involved in the process of researching asset classes and prospective investment managers and monitoring current investment managers. Additionally, the Strategist will be responsible for assisting the Investment Analyst in tracking, analyzing, evaluating and reporting on investment performance, reasons for over- and underperformance, and investment risks taken within the portfolios.

 

The Senior Investment Strategist is a member of the team responsible for identifying, researching, evaluating, and selecting investment managers to manage portions of the System’s investment portfolios in conjunction with overall management of the System’s portfolios and contributing to the development and implementation of strategy for those portfolios. The Strategist will be the System’s expert on assigned asset classes and will be responsible for searching for prospective investment managers within those classes and managing relationships with existing investment managers.

 

Both Investment Strategists and Sr Investment Strategists are welcome to apply. The level of the position will be based on experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities

Investment Strategist:
1. Recommend, design and implement reports and processes for quantifying and tracking investment performance and risk
2. Participate collaboratively with the investment team in the decision-making process associated with all System investment portfolios, major asset classes and managers
3. Develop and enhance the team’s selection process and evaluation criteria for managers
4. Evaluate potential managers, recommended by the Senior Investment Strategist, for addition to the investment portfolios
5. Provide relevant information, data and insights for the development of properly diversified portfolios of all asset classes including hedge funds, real assets, and private equity
6. Evaluate market trends for opportunities not yet considered
7. In conjunction with the investment team, develop and maintain the infrastructure
    7.1 Track and evaluate potential managers
8. Act as lead liaison with the System’s investment managers for all operational matters and work with other partners, including the System’s custodian and consultant, to ensure smooth operation of the System’s investment portfolios
9. Manage the portfolio rebalancing process with the Investment Analyst including coordination of buy/sell transactions among investment managers and custody banks
10. Review and prepare documents for new investments, with support of Legal Services and Risk Department and Tax Department, and negotiate terms

Sr. Investments Strategists:
1. Serve as expert for assigned major asset classes and/or System portfolios as it relates to alpha generation, manager prospecting, manager selection and monitoring, introduction of investment strategies /vehicles, and risk evaluation
2. Participate collaboratively with the investment team in the decision -making process associated with all
3. System investment portfolios, major asset classes and managers
4. Develop and enhance the team’s selection process and evaluation criteria for managers
5. Evaluate potential managers and strategies for addition to the investment portfolios
6. Assist in the development of properly diversified portfolios of non-traditional assets such as hedge funds, real assets, and private equity
7. Evaluate market trends for opportunities not yet considered
8. In conjunction with the investment team, develop and maintain the infrastructure to
    8.1 Evaluate managers and portfolios performance
    8.2 Identify risks within each portfolio and quantify the value of those risks and impact to the portfolios
9. Assist in the development of junior team members including opportunities to manage

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree required, focus on hard sciences (i.e., mathematics, finance, computer science, physics) preferred but any discipline will be considered. Advanced degree with a focus on finance, economics, and mathematics preferred.

 

EXPERIENCE

Investment Strategist: At least five years of experience working in the investment function of an investment management firm, foundation/endowment, pension plan, or investment advisory firm. Other relevant buy-side investment experience will be considered as well as any other relevant analytical, reporting, and/or accounting experience.

Sr Investment Strategist: A minimum of 10 years of experience working in the investment function of an investment management firm, foundation/endowment, pension plan, or investment advisory firm. Other relevant buy-side investment experience will be considered. Experience managing/mentoring preferred.

 

LICENSURE

Investment qualification such as CFA, CAIA, FSA, and FRM or progress towards a designation is preferred at the Investment Strategist level, required at the Sr Investment Strategist level.

 

SPECIAL SKILLS

The Strategist will have excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. He/she will have a demonstrated knowledge of economics, finance, accounting, capital markets and investment markets. The Strategist will be a disciplined thinker with strong conceptual abilities, will be articulate and skilled at presenting and defending his/her ideas, and will have strong business writing skills.
