Responsible and accountable for planning, organizing, directing and coordinating daily surgery services. Collaborates with the NM in the preparation of revenue and expense budgets including human, financial and material resources. Provides clinical leadership through development and maintenance of standards of specialty surgery, clinical practice, participation in nursing division and surgery sections committee. Works collaboratively with Surgeons, interdisciplinary management and leadership personnel to promote proactive, effective, interactive shared governance relationship.. Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.



1. Implements intra-operative nursing care in accordance with PCS division standards of practice, hospital,
community, national standards and regulatory agency requirements.

1 .1 Monitors, revises, and adapts current specialty nursing practice in light of changing concepts, methods, techniques and written standards of care.
1. 2 Enforces written intra-operative standards of care relevant to operating room specialty services and maintains standards within area accepted practice parameters.
1 .3 Executes monitoring mechanism for assessment of specialty delivered care.
1 .4 Effectively evaluates assigned staff performance based on standards of care.

2. Organizes and implements specialty program modification and development based on departmental goals/objectives and physician needs.
2 .1 Develops realistic annual objectives for specialty service as directed by NM.
2. 2 Actively participates in the review and updating of departmental policies, operational procedures and protocol.
2 .3 Actively seeks staff points of view for specialty program development and practice changes.
2 .4 Actively participates in quality improvement program development and implementation.
2 .5 Actively participates in credentialing of specialty services staff.


3. Communicates operating room concerns, operations, practice changes and medical-legal issues to NM.
3 .1 Resolves problems at lowest level and uses appropriate chain of command to address program areas.
3 .2 Prepares and submits monthly specialty activity report to NM.
3 .3 Meets regularly with specialty service staff and provides meeting minutes within 48 hours.

3 .4 Confronts personnel issues appropriately and resolves within department and hospital policy guidelines.
3 .5 Enforces departmental policy and procedures with specialty service staff.
3 .6 Executes disciplinary measures in collaboration with NM within specialty service.
3 .7 Collaborates with NM and performs yearly performance evaluation reviews with specialty service staff.
3 .8 Hold staff members accountable for performance through service assignments/responsibilities.
3 .9 Communicates physician issues to NM and provides follow-up to physicians in a timely manner.


4. Directs and coordinates daily nursing care activities. Provides direct patient care to maintain clinical and technical expertise and to serve as a role model to staff.
4 .1 Plans and anticipates surgeons and case-procedure needs in advance using appropriate nursing diagnosis and expected case outcomes.
4 .2 Exhibits supportive management performance behavior that fosters trust and confidence to staff, physicians, and other support personnel.
4 .3 Plans daily work assignments and case preparation to cover operative schedules and pre-operative input always assuring equal distribution of workload. Collaborates with NM in the assignment of staff.
4 .4 Actively participates in mentoring process providing written/verbal feedback on performance to Control Desk Coord. and NM.
4 .5 Maintains open communication with surgeons keeping them informed of personnel, policy, product and equipment changes as indicated by feedback from surgeons.


5. Facilitates surgical service materials needs through systematic maintenance of materials resources.


5 .1 Effectively coordinates processing, storage, restocking and inventory of  instruments, supplies and equipment in collaboration with materials staff.
5 .2 Collaborates to establishes par levels for chargeable and non-chargeable items in collaboration with materials staff.
5 .3 Works directly with surgeons, teams, and Business Service staff to ensure that all materials are available for surgical procedures.
5 .4 Ensures that inventory control system for specialty supplies and instruments are established and maintained properly manually and using the Surgi-Server database.
5 .5 Actively participates in budgetary process/collaborates with physicians and solicits budget needs to NM.


6. Supports and executes materials management program developed by the hospital and department.
6 .1 Coordinates with Materials management to establishes an efficient materials locator system.
6 .2 Establishes instrument tray content and ensures effective utilization of instruments ; adjusts quantity level based upon utilization.

6 .3 Monitors area waste and controls losses of instruments and equipment.
6 .4 Regularly reviews information on case-procedure preference card to ascertain control of waste.
6 .5 Actively participates in product identification and standardization.
6 .6 Coordinates with the Business Service Staff and SPD staff for review of materials and instrumentation issues.
6 .7 Adheres to and supports vendor control and standardization policy and procedures as defined by hospital and department.


7. Maintains efficient resource information of case-procedures performed.

7 .1Works collaboratively with Surgery MIS Manager in the development of an efficient surgery scheduling database.
7 .2 Enforces the preference card maintenance guidelines.
7 .3 Collaborates with surgeons on a regular basis to discuss mechanisms used to prepare for case-procedure efficiently.
7 .4 Informs MIS Manager when equipment/supply resources are not available due to breakage, back order, etc.


8. Ensures efficiency and fiscal responsibilities in timely completion of scheduled cases. On time starts, overtime management.
8 .1 Efficiently plans the coordination of surgical cases scheduled to services by delegating leadership role to staff with proven organizational skills .
8 .2 Collaborates with NM to provide required resources that balance case acuity and staff skill demands.
8 .3 Maximizes utilization of staff by supporting the greater staffing needs of the unit.
8 .4 Collaborates with educators and management to maintain sufficient skilled staffing mix to maintain quality services to client-surgeon and quality care to patients.

9. Maintains credentialling requirements..
9 .1 Completes 10 CEU's annually.
9 .2 Maintains specialty certification.
9 .3 Provides 4 independent staff inservices a year.
9 .4 Chairs/co-chairs unit based committee and submits minutes at unit staff meetings.


EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. Bachelors degree in Nursing or enrollment required.

EXPERIENCE : Minimum 3-5 years experience in an OR setting required. Progressive leadership experience desirable with proven track record of success in program development or participation, program implementation in areas of clinical patient care management, staff development and specialty services materials management.  Certified Operating Room nurse required or obtained within 1 year of employment. Experienced Operating Nurse, leadership experience and Strong interpersonal skills.


Licensed and a currently registered nurse in the State of Connecticut. All newly hired Registered Nurses must have current BCLS certification or obtain within one month of hire.Certified Operating Room nurse required or obtained within 1 year of employment. 

Requires prolonged standing; walking; use of sight, hearing and touch; moving/lifting patients of verying weights.
