RN First Assistant (RNFA) assists surgeon during a surgical procedure and carries out functions that assist in performing a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. RNFA is an experienced perioperative nurse who has acquired additional necessary knowledge, skills and judgment within the clinical practice. RNFA practices at the direction of the surgeon.
Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing. Licensed and a currently registered nurse in the State of Connecticut
3-5 years in OR nursing. CNOR certified. Successful completion of an RNFA program that meets the AORN recommended Educational Standards for the RN FA. ACLS preferred.
Established scrubbing skills with strong knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and operative techniques related to first assisting. Knowledge and skills in applying principles of aseptic technique. Ability to perform harmoniously as a member of the operative team. Ability to recognize safety hazards and to initiate appropriate preventative and corrective action. Intraoperative nursing skills in suturing, handling tissue, using instruments, providing exposure, and providing hemostasis.
RNFA and RN required.
