Summary:
Under the direction of the nurse manager, manages individualized, goal-directed nursing care through the use of the nursing process and the principles of primary nursing, in accordance with departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
Responsibilities:
1. Essential Functions
Assesses the patient's physical and psychological condition on an ongoing basis throughout the continuum of care. Documents appropriately the information obtained from the ongoing assessment. Shares significant assessment data with the appropriate discipline.
Using the four tenets of Patient Family Centered Partnership, develops, communicates and documents a plan of care reflecting individualized patient problems and interventions to achieve the desired outcomes. Incorporates feedback from patient, family and all disciplines in developing the plan of care.
Uses critical thinking skills and judgment necessary to implement the medical plan of care, nursing interventions, and procedures as necessary for the care of the patient. Demonstrates basic clinical and technical skills according to established standards of practice. Anticipates potential changes in the patient's status and assesses the patient accordingly.
Evaluates the effectiveness and patient's response to the plan of care. Identifies appropriate nursing activities which contribute to the patient's progress towards achieving both short and long term goals.
Adheres to The Westerly Hospital policies and procedures
Adheres to the hospitals exposure control plans/blood- borne and airborne pathogens
Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure the smooth operation of the department to provide quality patient care.
2. Staff/Self Development
Acts as a clinical resource and role model
Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to safety of the organization and specific job related hazards.
Takes initiative to keep informed and updated on department and hospital information by attending staff meetings, checking e-mails, and department posting.
Actively participates in training and educational activities for one's own development.
3. Staff/Self Development (continued)
Actively participates in train and educational activities for other staff members
Functions as a preceptor to new staff. Assists orientee to integrate theory and practice. Seeks and provides opportunities for continued growth and learning in the clinical setting. Challenges orientee to successfully perform with increasing independence based on the individual's degree of readiness. Gives constructive and timely feedback to the orientee. Sets appropriate clinical goals based on the orientee's achievement level.
Functions as a charge nurse when appropriate.
Participates in quality improvement activities
4. Customer Service
Demonstrate a high level of respect, dignity compassion and professionalism for all customers by utilizing the four tenets of Patient Family and Centered Partnership.
Responds to customer’s issues/requests in a clear concise and timely manner utilizing active listening skills and validating information.
Promotes positive intradepartmental and interdepartmental relationships
Maintains confidentiality with respect to patient, co-worker and hospital information by disclosing information only on a "need to know basis" and discussing information in appropriate areas.
5. Employee Collaboration and Teamwork
Recognizes and values the contributions of fellow employees and displays cooperation and teamwork.
Demonstrates flexibility and willingness to adapt to organizational and departmental needs.
Identifies ways to improve work environment and give potential solutions when problems are identified.
Promotes effective working relations across all departments to facilitate meeting both the departments and hospitals goals and objective.
6. Resource Utilization
Reports to work on time, prepared to work and follow hospital policies for notice of lateness/absenteeism and time off requests.
Prioritizes responsibilities appropriately and completes tasks within assigned time frames. Readily accepts assignments.
Uses and respects resources as if it were their own. Exercises good judgment in supply usage.
Takes initiative to use down time productively.
Qualifications
Other information:
EDUCATION
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
EXPERIENCE
Medical-surgical nursing, pediatrics, telemetry experience preferred.
LICENSES:
Current state registration.
BLS required
ACLS (Optional)
PALS within one year of hire
REQUIRED SKILLS:
Demonstrated proficiency in acute-care nursing, knowledge, and skills.
Ability to communicate effectively and document information accurately
Ability to deal efficiently and effectively with a wide variety of individuals
Basic computer knowledge is preferred
Strong ability to communicate and interact professionally in busy environment
