Under the supervision of the Microbiology/Central Processing Manager, the Specimen Intake coordination is responsible for handling and processing Clinical and Anatomical Pathology specimen?s Primary responsibilities include accurately ordering specimens into the laboratory information systems and specimen retrieval and routing. Additionally, the Specimen Intake Coordinator performs a variety of office functions to include: filing, faxing, and e-mailing patient reports and materials and works effectively with the customer to answer specimen or other laboratory related questions in a timely manner to ensure the best patient care. Demonstrates good customer service by answering the phone. Monitors Laboratory Medicine email and voicemail and provides timely response. Works with the Managers to maintain and improve workflow in the Specimen Processing and Reference Area. Assists with staff training, billing and other duties as assigned.
High School Diploma or equivalent. Associate's preferred.
Two (2) to three (3) experience in a hospital laboratory preferred.
Technical, communication, and organizational skills required. Attention to detail, medical terminology, and excellent keyboard skills required.
Requires walking, sitting and carrying specimens weighing up to 30 pounds. Working knowledge of computer systems, anatomy, and medical terminology. Typing experience required (20-25 wpm). Excellent customer service Skills required to include: communication skills, telephone skills and interpersonal skills.Excellent attention to detail is a must. Must be able to perform multiple tasks and have the ability to prioritize. Flexibility in scheduling will be required.
