The Molecular Technical Director will supervise the development and implementation of complex clinical molecular assays and the introduction of new technologies. The Molecular Technical Director will work with the Molecular Medical Directors and the laboratory manager to implement new tests and optimize current tests in the clinical Molecular Pathology Laboratory. Responsibilities include assay design, feasibility studies, clinical validation following all regulatory guidelines (CAP, CLIA, FDA), and transference of assays to production. Additional responsibilities include optimization and monitoring quality and performance of existing methods and technologies as well as the coordination and day to day supervision of the molecular staff. The Technical Director will be encouraged to attend conferences/meetings and provide educational activities such as talks and rotations for the technologists, medical residents, and fellows.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Molecular Pathology Clinical Laboratory.
  • 2. Oversee the expansion of new tests to the clinical laboratory test menu.
  • 3. Meet with laboratory personnel daily to assess laboratory status and operational needs.
  • 4. Ensure that all sequencing data meets required quality metrics and troubleshoot quality issues as needed.
  • 5. Consults with medical directors concerning the needs and requirements for new clinical assays and methods.
  • 6. Works collaboratively to coordinate, prioritize, and direct next-generation sequencing projects and resource allocation.
  • 7. Reviews and approves assay validations prior to implementation in clinical laboratory.
  • 8. Ensures the next generation sequencing testing systems developed and used for all tests provide quality laboratory services.
  • 9. Assists in developing, coordinating and supporting the laboratory's plans and programs for the standardization and automation of Genomics testing.
  • 10. Supports technical laboratory operations to identify, troubleshoot, and implement solutions for technical problems related to laboratory testing methods and result reporting.
  • 11. In conjunction with the laboratory manager, the Technical Director will support technical laboratory operations to develop and maintain complete and updated technical procedure manuals.
  • 12. Surveillance of technology and competitive trends by review or research articles or attendance of meetings/conferences.
  • 13. Efficient allocation and prioritization of time and resources to meet individual, team, and patient care goals.
  • 14. Understands and interprets all regulatory requirements from government agencies and private accreditation groups.
  • 15. Effectively communicates ideas, progress and data to laboratory staff and leadership.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

 

Doctoral degree in molecular genetics or similar biological sciences area of study with 5 or more years of post-graduate work in hospital or diagnostic laboratory.

 

EXPERIENCE

 

Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a clinical or research laboratory with a minimum of 3 years of proven experience in clinical molecular assay design, validation, and implementation according to CLIA and CAP guidelines. Experience in the development of molecular oncologic testing as well as previous supervisory experience.

 

LICENSURE

 

Board-certified or eligible in LGG, Clinical Molecular Genetics and Genomics by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG), American Board of Clinical Chemistry (ABCC), American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB) or equivalent Board-certification approved by HHS.

 

SPECIAL SKILLS

 

Able to work independently and in a multidisciplinary team-based environment. Attention to detail and methodical problem-solving skills. Experience with Next Generation Sequencing Technologies, statistical methods/programs, and test method validation requirements.
