Under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager, and in conjunction with other team members, assists with the monitoring of day-to-day operations and maintenance of the middleware system for chemistry automation. Requirements include ability to perform advanced problem solving, a thorough knowledge of Clinical Chemistry principles, and a technical understanding of automated chemistry instrumentation. Will work routinely on special projects, custom automated rule logic, software maintenance and change control, and new test development. Coordinates the development of new rules and programming for new testing requirements. Participates and contributes to the laboratory Quality Control and Quality Assurance programs. Monitors CAP compliance and maintains compliance with new and revised regulatory requirements. Serves as a lead with regard to special projects, particularly those that require changes, maintenance, and/or upgrades to the middleware software or servers. Provides technical assistance to all staff and serves as a resource capable of handling complex problems. Accepts and has aptitude for leadership, special projects, new initiatives, and assay development. Assist section coordinator in the training of staff on new and revised middleware changes. Cooperatively and proactively, assists in other areas as needed in a teamwork-oriented environment. Maintains procedure knowledge and implements all new and revised procedures in real time. Maintains all Quality Control and Quality Assurance standards at all times. Maintains operational effectiveness and assumes full responsibility for continuing education requirements, licensure, and expertise to adapt as needed to an expanding department with increased testing complexity.
- 1. 1. TECHNICAL SKILLS: Performs a wide variety of technical duties to ensure continuous reporting of accurate results. a. Demonstrates knowledge of all aspects of a given assay, including such concepts as analytical theory, quality control evaluation, reference ranges, critical values, clinical significance of the assay, instrumentation used, reagent stability, calibration, etc. b. Demonstrates the ability to write laboratory procedures that conform to CLSI, CLIA, and CAP standards. Reviews and updates procedures on an annual or as-needed basis. Ensures that all staff in the section have read and understand all applicable procedures and/or revisions. c. Demonstrates understanding of how automation applications are installed and programed. d. Demonstrates understanding of assay validation and proper protocols. e. Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of instrument operation including routine and STAT modes (if any), menu options, response to error flags, and identification of instrument components. f. As requested, in conjunction with the Medical Director and Laboratory Manager, develops and/or evaluates new tests and methods including statistical testing, reagent issues, test codes/fee codes, LIS issues, staff training, etc. Makes recommendations about implementation of these procedures.
- 2. 2. MIDDLEWARE SKILLS- Demonstrates sufficient knowledge and skills to independently develop and maintain the middleware. a. Demonstrates knowledge of custom rule writing. b. Demonstrated knowledge of mapping and configuration as it related to driver properties c. Develops rules and maintains rule sets for all instrument connections. d. Recognizes middleware/server problems when they occur by responding to error flags and system status indicators. Initiates trouble-shooting procedures in a systematic manner. e. Initiates trouble-shooting procedures when problems occur. Performs complex problems without help. Assists and instructs others in repair. Serves as a key trouble-shooter for middleware and server.
- 3. 3. REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS: Performs a variety of tasks to ensure IT regulatory compliance of middleware systems as it relates to CAP, JACHO, and state regulatory. a. Reviews on a regular basis all aspects of the Chemistry Laboratory auto verification system including routine audits of rules, documentation of all changes, review of new request/changes on weekly/monthly basis. b. Develops and maintains change control polices and documentation c. Demonstrates excellent problem-solving skills; responds to problems in an immediate fashion; thoroughly investigates all aspects of the problem; responds to complaints in a timely fashion; demonstrates excellent customer service by always being courteous and responsive to a complaint d. Ensures that the laboratory section complies with all items on the current CAP inspection checklist. e. Demonstrates knowledge of use of laboratory computer functions including downtime procedures. Demonstrates knowledge of general laboratory policies and procedures relating to middleware and LIS. f. Acts on problems and situations inconsistent with good patient care; evaluates causes and initiates appropriate corrective action in compliance with laboratory policies.
- 4. 4. PROFESSIONAL SKILLS: Participates in activities that demonstrate commitment to competency, career growth and professionalism a. Has excellent communication skills. Effectively communicates with the staff in a clear and concise manner. Encourages and elicits feedback from staff on work process improvement. Communicates well with other members of the Hospital staff, including physicians, nurses, managers, and supervisors of other departments. Maintains open communication with other members of the Department of Laboratory Medicine, including the Laboratory Directors, Laboratory Managers, and other section/shift coordinators. Effectively communicates pertinent issues to the Laboratory manager. b. Participates in continuing education / professional enrichment and coordinates staff attendance for Test of the Month, Research in Progress, In-House special educational opportunities, etc. c. Demonstrates a sensitivity to needs of coworkers and patients by monitoring adherence to policies governing confidentiality. Takes immediate action when violations occur. d. Accepts constructive criticism in a positive manner and takes immediate corrective action to improve performance when needed. e. Provides emotional support to staff when unusual situations arise. Organizes and assists others until situation stabilizes. f. Emotional maturity is exhibited on a consistent basis; controls anger in difficult situations and remains calm during stressful occasions.
Bachelor's of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems or equivalent. MLS / MT(ASCP) certification or equivalent preferred
Two (2) to three (3) years of in Data Innovations, Laboratory Information Systems, and/or experience in a high complexity Clinical Chemistry laboratory required.
Working knowledge and experience with instrumentation and equipment used in a Clinical Chemistry laboratory. High efficiency in word processing applications, spreadsheet design / utilization and use of web based resources. Possesses a thorough knowledge of laboratory information systems. Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate in an effective and professional manner with staff. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills are required. Strong organizational, problem solving and listening skills, attention to detail, innovative thinking and ability to inspire others required. The ability to work as a member of a team is essential. Laboratory experience is preferred, not required.
Degree in data science, computer science with experience either working in a laboratory setting or has experience with instrument middleware or Laboratory information system (EPIC/Beaker) highly preferred. Ideally, looking for applicants that have Data Innovation and/or Roche experience
