YNHHS is looking for an experienced medical malpractice liability claims professional to join the Legal & Risk Services Department in its litigation practice group. The Litigation Services group manages institutional and individual claims and lawsuits including medical professional liability and general liability, among other litigation and captive related functions. We are seeking a colleague who will be able to take initiative, work independently to manage a high volume and complex caseload, and be a collaborative team member.

Responsibilities

The Sr. Legal & Risk Specialist provides a wide range of services in connection with YNHHS’ captive insurance program. This position is responsible for day-to-day:

• Management of medical malpractice liability claims from start to closure, including review of insurance coverage, insured support, legal holds, evaluation for liability and compensability, setting case reserves, directing outside counsel, negotiation and settlement of claims, external reporting of settlements, and escalation of identified risk mitigation opportunities

• Supervision of claim specialists in management of general liability claims

• Analysis of claim activities and preparation of claim trending reports
• Captive insurance administration and underwriting functions including responding to medical liability insurance coverage questions

This position requires knowledge of insurance policy structure, terms and conditions; local, state, and federal regulatory requirements related to claims litigation; medical and legal terminology; and reinsurance principals and coverage structure.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of medical malpractice liability claims management or litigation experience required with some portion of that in a healthcare setting preferred
• Demonstrated experience with negotiating medical malpractice liability claims
• Experience in general liability claims management experience is preferred
• Bachelor’s degree -- Master’s, JD, or other graduate degree a plus
• Active license to adjust claims in CT or CT State Multi-Line Casualty license, and willingness to become licensed in RI and NY
