Under the general direction of the Endoscopist and Nursing staff performs all duties that support patient care in the Endoscopy and GI Motility Units. These duties include direct and indirect patient care activities which are essential to providing comprehensive care to patients. Performs duties within an appropriate time frame, participates as a team member, contributing to a positive work environment. Demonstrates an outstanding commitment to excellent customer service, learning and skill development. Responsibilities
1. Performs technical duties which contribute to safe, effective and efficient patient care delivery.
1.1 Checks, maintains, and assures proper working condition of all equipment including suction, light
source, air, scopes and cameras.
1 .2 Performs all patient care responsibilities consistent with identifiedcriteria.
1 .3 Understands and applies the principles of aseptic technique at all times.
1.4 Checks for outdated sterile supplies, removes them from use and assures proper replacement in
conjunction with the Clinical Nurse.
1.5 During emergencies, supports the nursing and endoscopist with general emergency procedures,
procurement of equipment, supplies and delivery of specimens.
2. Assist the Endoscopist and Clinical Nurse in providing patient care.
Demonstrates ability in prepping responsibilities (applying EKG electrodes, B/P cuffs, pulse oximeter,
and oxygen).
2 .1 Positions patient, maintains privacy and ensures safety measures are adhered to (usage of side rails,
stretcher wheel locks are engaged prior to the procedure).
2 .2 Demonstrates knowledge in preparing the endoscopes, light source suction and other equipment for the
procedure.
2.3 Verifies working order prior to start of procedure.
2 .4 Demonstrates ability to assist the Endoscopist with procedure.
2.5 Demonstrates proper use and processing of endoscopy accessories including forceps, snares, brushes,
sclerotherapy, dilation equipment, etc.
2 .6 Handles and processes specimens in accordance with policy and procedure.
2.7 Assists with the end of the procedure process, cleanses the patient as needed and assist with the
transportation to the post recovery area.
2 .8 Cleans and prepares equipment for appropriate clean process post procedure.
3. Performs responsibly which contributes to the efficient operation of the department. Participates in keeping
the environment clean and organized.
3 .1 Safely transports patients to the procedure room.
Verifies patient identity by ID bracelets, (using YNHH approved patient identifiers), verbal
acknowledgment, and patient chart.
3 .2 Initiates actions to correct inadequate supplies, faulty equipment and environmental problems by
informing Clinical Nurse/Administration.
3 .3 Keeps equipment and equipment parts cleaned, organized and in proper working order.
3 .4 Keeps work area clean and organized.
3 .5 Assists with the preparation and turnover of rooms to ensure cleanliness and efficiency.
Follows SGNA, AORN and OSHA recommended practices for care of equipment, endoscopes and
accessories.
3 .6 Maintains daily records of equipment repairs as directed and within scope of practice.
3 .7 Adheres to universal precautions and observes principles of clean techniques when handling equipment.
3 .8 Anticipates equipment needs for scheduled procedures.
3 .9 Maintains competency in areas of responsibility and participates in unit activities to promote a cohesive team.
3 .10 Completes on line mandatory continuing education classes as required.
4. Ensures annual PPD is current.
4 .1 Participates in department and divisional specific continuing education classes and in-services.
4 .2 Attends and actively participates in staff meetings. Accepts responsibility to review information if unable
to attend meetings.
4 .3 Supports values and mission of the division.

Qualifications
EDUCATION:
Minimum of high school graduate or equivalent. Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS). Connecticut Certified
Nursing Assistant Certificate or Surgical Tech Certification preferred and Certification in Sterile Processing
considered.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of one (1) year PCA/CNA experience and/or one year GI clinical support experience and/or Perioperative
experience as a Surgical Tech or in Sterile Processing.
SPECIAL SKILLS:
Excellent communications, interpersonal, coordinative, and organizational skills. Knowledge of Endoscopic room
procedure and universal precautions. Excellent communication skills. Individual must be able to tolerate high stress
areas of work. Ability to read, writes, and perform basic math. All duties require some pushing, pulling, bending and
standing. Must be able to read instructional materials and labels. Must be able to take and follow direction. Must be
able to participate as member of the patient care team.
ACCOUNTABILITY:
Performs duties under direction of an RN. Provides technical assistance and direct support to Endoscopic
Healthcare team. Recognizes equipment malfunctions, corrects as necessary. Assembles equipment and safety
devices. Performs pre procedure care duties to patients in preparation for Endoscopic and Motility Procedures .
Accountable for following all departmental and divisional policies and procedures.
COMPLEXITY:
Demonstrates understanding by responding appropriately to changes in the clinical area and other emergencies .
Identifies and resolves problems accurately and independently. Initiates emergency care under physician direction .
Prioritizes responsibilities throughout the shift and work in collaboration with the RN and Endosopist.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)
Nursing Assistant Certificate or Surgical Tech Certification or Certification in Sterile Processing
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMAND:
Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds. Ability to perform tasks of physical endurance and dexterity as
required. Consistent use of proper body mechanics.
Additional Information
Healthcare or ambulatory experience preferred.
